Fans Rally Across Gangwon to Support South Korea Despite Narrow World Cup Loss

Across Gangwon province—Chuncheon, Gangneung, and Sokcho—residents, students, office workers and festival-goers gathered to cheer for the South Korean national team during their 2026 World Cup group match against Mexico. Crowds watched on large screens in university auditoriums, city plazas, offices, and at the Gangneung Danoje (traditional Dano festival) site, singing “Dae~hanminguk” and waving taegeukgi (the South Korean flag). Despite a late goal that decided the match, supporters stayed until the final whistle, applauding the players’ effort and hoping for a rebound in the final group game. Scenes included kindergarten children wearing “Red Devils” headbands (the popular nickname for Korea’s supporters), fans in hanbok (traditional Korean dress) joining festival cheering, and coworkers sharing delivered food while watching together—showing community spirit and continued optimism for advancing to the round of 32.
