Heartwarming Korean Musicals: Grandmothers’ Poems and a Dancing Tribe

Two family-friendly musicals in Seoul bring warm laughter and tears. At the National Theater’s Haneul Stage, Ojjige Jaeminneun Gasinadeul (roughly “So Much Fun Ladies”) transforms honest poems written by countryside grandmothers who learned Hangul late in life into songs. The performers’ dialect-filled verses and scenes—like a grandmother fulfilling her lifelong dream of singing in a school uniform—move audiences to both giggles and tears. At Sejong Center’s M Theatre, The Tribe is a fast-paced, never-ending dancing musical about Chloe, a discouraged writer, and Joseph, a museum restorer, who uncontrollably dance whenever they lie as an invisible ancient tribe appears and joins them. The ensemble’s energetic choreography and playful challenge to “shed falsehoods and find yourself” fuel big laughs. Both shows emphasize gentle, wholesome comfort over shock or cynicism, and offer discounted timed ticket sales through the 22nd.
