Opposition to Appointment of Administrative Officer as Director of National Gugak Center in Korea

There is growing opposition from the Korean gugak community to the inclusion of a Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism official as a candidate for the new director of the National Gugak Center (an institution promoting traditional Korean music). Leaders from various Korean music and education organizations argue that the director should be someone with deep expertise in traditional arts, not an administrative officer. The position has been vacant for 10 months, and the cultural community fears for the future of gugak if someone without specific knowledge is appointed.
