Daejeon, a city known for its emphasis on science since the 1993 Expo, has a collection direction closely linked to this theme, especially after the "Project Daejeon" in 2012, which focused on new media art. This has led to a collection that includes notable works from both domestic and international artists. Among these is the concept of two 'Ouroboros', a symbol representing the cycle and essence of life.
The first Ouroboros is part of Kim Yoon-chul's creation, 'Chroma', seen in the Korean Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale. It's a monumental piece that visually depicts the intersection of symbols, knowledge, imagination, material, and spirit through a structure that resembles a snake entering its scales.
Choi Woo-ram's 'Ouroboros' is another notable artwork which shows intricate structures and rotations that blur the line between beginnings and ends. Inspired by machines, the artist examines existential themes related to life and death, suggesting a new ecosystem where machines and humans coexist. Through carefully crafted elements, both works reflect deep thoughts on the essence of life and living systems.
