The Korean space agency has expressed its intention to officially join the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, which aims to build the world's largest and most powerful radio telescope. The project, with an estimated budget of around 3 trillion won, is set to be completed by 2030 and will enhance the study of early universe formation and the potential existence of extraterrestrial life. SKA consists of two main sites—one in Australia for low-frequency observations and another in South Africa for mid-frequency observations. South Korea plans to invest approximately 447 billion won, seeking priority in data access and enhancing domestic industries' involvement in the project. This participation is expected to contribute to Korea's scientific community and its reputation as a space power.
