The Korean Education Center in New Zealand announced that for the first time, New Zealand's mainstream society will host a Seollal (Lunar New Year) event to celebrate the Korean New Year. The festival will be held on February 1 and 8 in Auckland, jointly with the Chinese community. Traditionally, the Lunar New Year celebrations in New Zealand have focused on Chinese culture due to the large Chinese population. However, the rising popularity of Korean culture, particularly K-Pop, has led to an increased interest in Korean traditions. The festival includes various cultural performances, Korean food such as tteokguk (rice cake soup), and interactive experiences like trying on hanbok (traditional clothing) and learning calligraphy. This event is an opportunity to introduce New Zealanders to Korean traditional holidays and culture.
