Hyundai Mobis and its lamp-making subsidiary Hyundai IHL reached a labor agreement that ended about a month-long strike and secured workers’ employment if the unit is sold. The deal, approved by Hyundai IHL union members, includes full employment succession for production staff, 100% retention of R&D personnel, and pay measures similar to another unit (five years of performance pay plus a 50 million won incentive). Hyundai Mobis delegated negotiations to the subsidiary but also signed the agreement (including CEO Lee Gyu-seok’s signature) to show responsibility as the main contractor. Unions call this outcome akin to bargaining with the principal employer. As Hyundai Mobis pursues business restructuring to fund new ventures like robotics, both management and labor are preparing for potential future “labor risks” (노무 리스크) by forming countermeasure committees and reorganizing labor relations roles.
