Pyongyang-style naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) has evolved from a comfort food of first-generation refugees into a widespread Seoul specialty, boosted by social media and food shows. A panel of 10 experts and enthusiasts ranked the year’s best shops, producing a top list that mixes long-standing 'nopo' (old-established) restaurants and innovative independent spots. Joint winners include Uraekok (renowned for a rich beef broth), Pildong Myeonok (famed for its drink-then-noodle culture and spicy garnishes), and Eulji Myeonok (a resilient traditional place that moved locations). Other notable entries are Jinmi (a modern hybrid in Gangnam), the original Uijeongbu Pyeongyang Myeonok, Jungin Myeonok (good value and handmade buckwheat), and newer craft-focused shops like Seoryeong and Gwangpyeong. The piece emphasizes diversity in broths, buckwheat ratios and toppings, and says there is no single “correct” naengmyeon — the variety and chefs’ creativity are key attractions. It also notes areas for improvement such as seasoning of noodles, side-dish sweetness, service, and consistency given rising prices.
