“Hermès look for a few dozen dollars?” Jelly ‘Firkin’ bags return with MZ thrift trend

Luxury Hermès Birkin bags—usually worth millions of won—have inspired a low-cost revival: jelly ‘Firkin’ bags (퍼킨, a blend of “fake” and “Birkin”) made from PVC/TPU are appearing on streets and social media for about ₩20,000–80,000. The soft, transparent colored bags echo Birkin design elements (flap, belt-lock, padlock) but use inexpensive materials, so they feel playful rather than exact counterfeits. Firkin bags first surfaced around 2003 and re-emerged with Y2K fashion and celebrity sightings—K-pop group Kiki and TV personality Choi Hwajung helped boost interest. Shoppers find vintage pieces on secondhand apps (당근마켓, 번개장터) or buy new “dupe” versions from online shops and group buys. Analysts say this ‘dupe’ trend reflects MZ generation’s practical spending: they want Birkin-style looks without the cost, though legal and design-right disputes can arise when replicas copy brand details too closely.
