Two stage productions in Korea—musical Billy Elliot and the original dance-drama Navillera—use ballet to explore the value of dreams and life. Billy Elliot, adapted from the 2000 film, is set in a 1980s British mining village during mine closures and tells how a boy’s dream to become a ballet dancer inspires community solidarity. The role of Billy requires talented child actors (aged 8–12) who train intensively in ballet, tap, and acrobatics; standout scenes include the ‘angry dance’ and the ‘dream ballet’ where young and adult Billy dance together. Navillera, based on a webtoon, follows 76-year-old Shim Deok-chul, who remembers Russian ballet from childhood and, despite Alzheimer’s (알츠하이머병) and family opposition, pursues ballet lessons with a troubled young former hopeful, Lee Chae-rok. Their evolving relationship and final pas de deux (파드 되) celebrate intergenerational empathy and perseverance. Both works highlight how persistent training against gravity mirrors life’s struggles and uplift audiences with famous ballet pieces like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker performed by real dancers.
