Lahav Shani, acclaimed young conductor and incoming music director of the Munich Philharmonic, praised pianist Cho Seong-jin as a technically superb artist with a distinct musical voice ahead of the orchestra’s Asia tour stop in Korea (May 5–12). The Munich Philharmonic, known for its traditional German sound and historical ties to Mahler, will perform piano concertos by Beethoven and Prokofiev (featuring Cho), as well as symphonies by Mahler and Brahms in Seoul and Incheon. Shani—who won the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in 2013 and became music director of the Israel Philharmonic in 2020—highlighted the orchestra’s rich tone and lyrical breadth. Florian Vigant, the orchestra’s representative, praised Korean audiences as “world-class” for their intelligence and focus, and announced plans for a return visit with Bruckner’s Symphony No.7 next year.
