Protein vs. Carbs: What to Eat Before Drinking to Lessen a Hangover

If you’re worried about a hangover, not drinking is best — but if you will drink, experts say the key is a balanced meal before your first drink. Carbohydrates (like whole grains or potatoes) help maintain steady blood sugar, preventing dizziness and fatigue caused by alcohol’s blood-sugar lowering effects. Protein (eggs, chicken, fish) slows digestion, reducing alcohol absorption speed and supplying amino acids that help the liver neutralize toxic byproducts (acetaldehyde). Adding healthy fats (avocado, nuts, olive oil) further slows absorption, increases satiety, and may lower the chance of overdrinking. An ideal pre-drinking meal includes all three: for example, chicken with brown rice, vegetables, and avocado, or salmon with quinoa and greens. Timing matters: eat before your first drink and avoid drinking on an empty stomach. Still, food only reduces symptoms — the surest prevention is drinking in moderation.
