From Carpenter to Entrepreneur: Navigating the Journey
Creatrip Team

Sung-heon Kim, who runs the 'Mayann Carpentry Workshop' in Mapo-gu, Seoul, transitioned from a hobbyist to a professional carpenter at the age of 30. He pursued a master's degree in furniture design from Hongik University and recently launched a business creating unique climbing devices called 'Monkey Wall'. His approach to carpentry focuses on aesthetics, creating furniture with distinctive features. Despite offering expert courses with a strong focus on operating a workshop, only about 60 out of 300 students have gone on to start their own carpentry businesses. The demanding nature of carpentry, both physically and financially, leads many to keep it as a hobby. Nevertheless, many students express a desire to continue woodworking in the future, particularly post-retirement, citing the joy it brings.
