Catch of Hairtail Fish in Jeju Island Decreases Significantly

In Jeju Island, a famous tourist destination and the largest source of hairtail fish in South Korea, catching hairtail fish has become increasingly difficult. Local restaurants, known for serving grilled whole hairtail fish, have had to remove the dish from their menus due to supply shortages. The total amount of hairtail fish caught has decreased by 10-40% compared to the previous year across several fishing cooperatives on the island. This decline is attributed to rising sea temperatures affected by global warming, as hairtail fish typically thrive in waters around 25°C. Last summer's record heat increased sea temperatures, causing the catch amount to drop significantly.
