In 1623, King Gwanghae was overthrown during the Injo Revolt, suspecting betrayal by his former ally, Lee Ichum. Stripped of his titles and power, he was exiled to Ganghwa Island, and later to Jeju Island, considered the harshest place of exile in Joseon. Despite initial attempts by Injo's courtiers to discreetly eliminate him, they ultimately decided against it for ethical reasons. Internationally, there were unfriendly perceptions of his deposer, King Injo, due to rumors of Japanese assistance. Gwanghae remained in exile for several years, even as military conflicts arose with the Qing dynasty concerning his rightful place. Upon arrival in Jeju, Gwanghae purportedly reflected on his failures as a ruler, shedding tears when reminded of historical lessons on leadership. Gwanghae's later years in Jeju were marked by contemplation and acknowledgment of his missteps, despite once being a significant political figure caught in the turbulent factionalism of the era.
