The 59th Danjong Cultural Festival in Yeongwol (honoring King Danjong) will run April 24–26 at Jangneung, Cheongnyeongpo and the Donggang riverside. The festival benefits from the blockbuster film "The King Who Lives with a Man" (왕과 사는 남자), whose success has driven tourism to Danjong’s exile sites and increased interest in the event. Director Jang Hang-joon and cast are helping promote the festival; director Jang will attend the opening. World-renowned composer Yang Bang-ean, who was the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics music director, composed the festival theme “Rebirth,” debuting with a music video at the opening ceremony. Government agencies are also supporting the festival: the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety designated the nearby Yeongwol Central Market as a “food safety zone” (식품안심구역), the first such designation for a Gangwon traditional market. Korail launched train packages including a special service timed for the festival, and Yeongwol is eligible for the new “half-price travel” government subsidy (지역사랑 휴가 지원) that refunds 50% of travel costs via local digital vouchers. Organizers hope the film’s momentum and these supports will make the festival more vibrant and boost the local economy.
