Scalp pain—sharp, aching, or tender sensations when hair moves—can result from various causes and shouldn’t be ignored. The most common cause is physical tension from hairstyles like tight ponytails, buns, or hair extensions, which put pressure on hair follicles. Scalp inflammation from conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff) or allergic reactions to hair products can also trigger pain accompanied by itching, flaking, or redness. Headaches, including tension-type headaches and migraines, may produce scalp sensitivity (allodynia) so that light touch hurts. Other skin conditions like psoriasis, folliculitis (hair follicle infection), or fungal infections can cause pain along with crusts, flaking, or hair loss. Because the scalp is rich in nerves and blood vessels, even small changes can cause burning, tingling, or pain. If pain lasts more than 1–2 weeks, is localized, or comes with rash, bleeding, or hair loss, see a dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment. Prevention includes avoiding tight hairstyles, reducing harsh hair products, keeping the scalp clean, and managing stress—many cases improve with lifestyle changes.
