Korean Retailers Compete to Attract Foreign Tourists

In January, over 1.12 million foreign tourists visited Korea, a 26.8% increase from the previous year. Tourists from China, Japan, Taiwan, the US, and Hong Kong are particularly interested in experiencing Korean lifestyle, with shopping for cosmetics and clothing high on their agenda. Major retail chains in Korea, like Hyundai Department Store, Musinsa, and CJ Olive Young, have seen significant revenue spikes from foreign customers. Retailers plan to further enhance customer experiences by introducing new services such as currency exchange kiosks, tax refund machines, and multilingual assistance. Experts foresee continued growth in foreign tourist numbers and the subsequent expansion of tailored services to attract them.
