Autonomous Freight Trucks to Operate on All South Korean Highways

The South Korean government has announced an expansion of its pilot zones for autonomous vehicles on highways from the current 4 routes covering 332 km to 44 routes totaling 5224 km. This expansion aims to commercialize long-distance autonomous driving services and includes the implementation of paid freight transportation services. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has revised the standards for permitting paid cargo transport, allowing more flexibility in reporting freight capacity due to differing cargo types. This move is part of a broader strategy to support South Korean companies in gaining a foothold in the global autonomous freight transport market by facilitating research and testing on highways.
