Research Shows Rats Perform CPR-like Actions on Unconscious Peers

A recent study published in the journal Science reveals that rats can perform CPR-like actions on their unconscious peers. Researchers from the University of Southern California observed that when placed in a space with an anesthetized rat, a normal rat would pull out the tongue of the immobile rat to clear its airway and nibble around its mouth, resembling human resuscitation techniques. This behavior, believed to be driven by the release of oxytocin, a hormone involved in bonding and care, helped the anesthetized rats recover consciousness more quickly. The study suggests that such social behaviors could be an innate characteristic present in various animal species.
