Museums and Palaces Offer Free Events for Lunar New Year Holiday

Museums and palaces across Seoul and other regions will host free openings and family programs during the Lunar New Year (Seollal) holiday. The National Museum of Korea will offer free admission to its major special exhibition “Our Yi Sun-shin” on Feb 15, 16 and 18; its regular galleries are already free. The museum’s plum-flower spring exhibit runs until Feb 18 with an Instagram photo giveaway. Regional national museums are holding hands-on activities—Gwangju’s ceramic center offers a multi-stamp bookmark workshop (Feb 14–16) and Daegu has traditional craft sessions like making a gat keyring (Feb 14–16). The National Folk Museum will host a family-focused “Seollal” event on Feb 16 with fortune-telling by yut (traditional stick game), making sebaetdon (New Year money envelopes) and bokjumeoni (luck pouches), and playing folk games like jegichagi and top-spinning. Seoul’s four royal palaces, Jongmyo shrine, and Joseon royal tombs are open free daily from Feb 14–18 (except some paid areas like Changdeokgung’s rear garden). At Gyeongbokgung’s main plaza, 2,000 sewhwa (traditional New Year blessing prints) will be distributed daily Feb 16–18 to wish for health and luck; this year’s print features the red horse from the zodiac. Note: seollal (Korean Lunar New Year), yut (윷, traditional throwing sticks), sebaetdon (세뱃돈, New Year money), bokjumeoni (복주머니, luck pouch), sewhwa (세화, New Year print).
