Jeju International Airport was bustling on the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday as families reunited and travelers arrived for vacations. Emotional scenes included a granddaughter in a yellow hanbok (traditional Korean dress) running to embrace her grandparents and children giving sweets to relatives. Despite cloudy weather, many visitors from Seoul and elsewhere arrived to spend the long holiday on the island. Airport parking reached capacity, so authorities added 700 temporary parking spaces and prepared special traffic measures expecting about 520,000 airport users and roughly 245,000 arrivals to Jeju during the six-day holiday. Local agencies activated 24-hour emergency response centers and increased police and fire safety measures to ensure a safe holiday period.
