Woman in her 30s paralyzed after slipping while collecting laundry; doctors warn 'golden time' for cauda equina syndrome

A 34-year-old woman in Lancashire, UK, slipped while bringing in laundry and later woke with paralysis and swollen foot. Initially told she had a coccyx fracture and no MRI was done, her condition worsened over weeks; she developed full right-side paralysis, urinary incontinence and was later diagnosed with cauda equina syndrome (CES), a rare spinal emergency where the nerve bundle at the base of the spine is compressed. CES can cause back pain, sciatica, numbness around the perineum and anus, leg weakness or paralysis, and bladder or bowel dysfunction. Rapid diagnosis with CT or MRI and surgical decompression within 24–48 hours is critical to prevent permanent deficits — the so-called “golden time.” Common causes include herniated discs, severe trauma, infections or intense strain; immediate hospital evaluation is advised if CES symptoms appear.
