If you want to avoid Korea’s heavy holiday highway traffic, head to Ganghwa Island—northwest of Seoul—where routes don’t overlap with the main homebound flow. The Korea Tourism Organization highlights three spots to unwind before the Lunar New Year rush. 1) Sochang Experience Center: a remodeled 1938 hanok (traditional Korean house) and former dye factory showcasing Ganghwa’s textile history. Visitors can see old sewing machines and looms, taste turnip tea, and join hands-on programs like making a sochang (cotton) handkerchief or trying on hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) for about 3,000 won; reservations required. 2) Oktokki Space Center: Korea’s first aerospace-themed cultural complex with a spiral building resembling a spaceport and dinosaur body, offering exhibits on aerospace history, 3D films, Mars exploration, VR experiences, and outdoor attractions like a lookout tower, dinosaur forest, robot park, and all-season sledding. 3) Daeryong Market on Gyodongdo: an island market steeped in the sorrow of displaced residents (silhyangmin) who could not return after the Korean War. With views across to North Korea and preserved 1960–70s alleyways—thanks in part to long-standing restrictions before the 2014 bridge—this market offers a poignant, historic atmosphere beyond typical sightseeing.
