Left and Right: Not Enemies but Allies in South Korea’s Development

At a ceremony in Seoul marking the 99th anniversary of the Sin Gan Hoe (新幹會) founding, speakers emphasized that Korea’s left and right, despite ideological differences, worked together for national progress and should be seen as allies rather than enemies. The Sin Gan Hoe was established on Feb. 15, 1927, as a cooperation front between non-compromising nationalist and socialist forces and promoted education, and farmer, labor and women’s movements. Organizers warned about the historical failure to sustain unity against Japanese divide-and-rule tactics and announced plans for the 100th anniversary next year, including academic conferences, memorial markers, a social integration forum and a national campaign to designate Feb. 15 as “Social Integration Day.” Around 100 attendees included descendants and figures from civic, academic and veterans’ groups.
