Veteran singer Kim Soo-chul has reinvented himself as a painter, producing large-scale canvases in his small Seoul home. Working in a two-pyeong (약 6.6㎡) kitchen and even using a gas stove as an easel, he completed 200-size paintings (large canvases, approx. 2.5m wide) and multiple 100-size pieces during the pandemic. As his home filled with artwork and paint fumes, he rented a storage-like studio outside the city but still keeps many works at home. His first solo exhibition, “Kim Soo-chul: Sound Paintings,” presents about 160 works across four sections—Sound Blue, Soo-chul’s Sound, Sound Beyond Sound, and Sound Birth—exploring the origins of sound, unconscious emotions, imagined cosmic sounds, and communication with an alien friend. Kim says his lifelong values of coexistence and preserving human nature and the environment inform his art, and that years of dedication to music (50 years) and painting (30 years) have finally earned him recognition.
