Violinist Esther Yoo releases her fourth Deutsche Grammophon album, Love Symposium, on February 12 — a Valentine’s Day-themed special project centered on Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium). The album interprets love through music, drawing on Plato’s philosophical dialogues about love and Bernstein’s conversational writing for solo violin and chamber orchestra. Yoo recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Long Yu and includes a chamber version of Mahler’s Adagietto (performed without a conductor by nine players), a new violin-orchestral arrangement of “Never Enough” (from the film The Greatest Showman), and John Williams’s “Flight of the Bumblebee” (본 윌리엄스 — John Williams). Yoo, now also a professor at the Royal College of Music (UK), says the album channels many personal experiences of love and will be performed live with Bucheon Philharmonic at the Seoul Arts Center festival in April.
