Cutting Boards May Harbor More Germs Than Toilets — How to Clean Them Properly

Everyday cutting boards can be hotspots for bacterial contamination, sometimes carrying more bacteria than toilet seats, researchers say. Tiny grooves from knife cuts and trapped food particles create ideal conditions for microbes like Salmonella and E. coli. Experts recommend washing boards immediately with hot water and dish soap, then drying them upright to prevent moisture buildup. For persistent odors, try a baking soda paste (leave 10–15 minutes), rubbing with salt and lemon, or wiping with vinegar — but always rinse thoroughly, especially if strong disinfectants are used. To avoid cross-contamination, use separate boards for vegetables and raw meat and keep boards dry after cleaning.
