Culture Minister Choi Vows Faster Hiring, More Grounded Cultural Policy

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choi Hwi-young said he will speed up recruitment for vacant heads of public cultural institutions after recent candidate rejections. Speaking at a press meeting marking six months in office, he stressed filling leadership gaps quickly and avoiding public comment on specific appointments. Choi promised to redesign cultural policy with more input from the field, including changes to “Culture Day” (a government program that promotes cultural activities on designated days) so benefits are felt more frequently by citizens. He said the ministry will support major events like BTS’s planned Gwanghwamun performance through interagency coordination, and favor government backing for privately driven international sports exchanges rather than top-down planning. Choi emphasized regular, practical engagement with arts and industry stakeholders and monthly working sessions to ensure cultural policy is experienced in everyday life.
