A long-term study from the University of São Paulo tracked 6,378 adults for eight years and found that higher intake of polyphenols (antioxidant compounds found in coffee) was linked to lower risk of metabolic syndrome. Participants consuming about 469 mg/day of polyphenols had a 23% reduced risk compared with those consuming 177 mg/day. The researchers say polyphenols may alter gut microbiota and reduce insulin resistance, lowering chances of heart disease and diabetes by nearly a quarter. They recommend getting polyphenols from a variety of foods—coffee, fresh fruits and vegetables, dark chocolate, and moderate wine—for stronger preventive effects. Separately, South Korea’s National Health Insurance data show about 70% of citizens are exposed to metabolic syndrome risk, with 23.9% already diagnosed and 45.9% in a “watch” group at high risk of developing it.
