Min Tae-hong, a Samcheok-born painter and winner of last year’s Donggok Art Award, has submitted his meteorite-based painting “Meteorite Space” (161 x 130 cm, 2024) to Bonhams’ Modern & Contemporary Art Online auction. The work is made by grinding rare meteorites (including a Mars iron meteorite) into powder and mixing them with paint, creating textured cosmic surfaces using impasto and a finger-and-nail technique called jiduhwa (지두화). Bonhams, one of the global top auction houses known for promoting regionally distinctive artists, has estimated the lot at $40,000–$60,000 (≈58–87 million KRW). Min’s meteorite paintings have been praised for expanding artistic materials toward the cosmos; earlier meteorite works sold at Heritage Auctions in Dallas for $30,000–$40,000.
