Chuncheon-based arts collective Ppong will open the 22nd Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival in New Delhi on the 13th with their non-verbal object theatre piece “DoomDoom Warning” (Korean title: 둥둥주의보). Invited back after earlier success with “Hongdongji and Ishimi,” Ppong — supported by the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange — will also perform in Chandigarh on the 19th. The ensemble, made up of young artists from Gangwon Province, has toured globally at festivals in Canada, Belgium, Taiwan, Japan and Kazakhstan. “DoomDoom Warning” reinterprets the Korean traditional yokai (a kind of folkloric spirit) called “Eoduksini” (어둑시니) through a silent performance that uses body movement, facial expression and everyday plastic bags as primary objects to explore fear and coexistence. Company director Kim Doran said she hopes the piece will normalize and connect audiences to the experience of anxiety and convey a distinct Korean artistic sensibility on the international stage.
