“Still Alive, So I Must Keep Working” — 90-Year-Old Actor Shinkoo Stars in Jang Jin’s New Comedy Play

Veteran director-playwright Jang Jin returns after 10 years with a new stage comedy, "The France Safe: Who Will Climb the North Wall," opening March 7 in Seoul. The play was created for legendary 90-year-old actor Shin Goo, who stars as a master safe-cracker (gold vault thief) named Maengin. The story follows five characters who plan a heist to fulfill their different desires and face the consequences during one chaotic night. Shin Goo, who calls acting as essential as eating, acknowledges memory and mobility challenges but says he will do his best. Fellow cast members praise his stage presence and influence; 12 actors, including Seong Ji-ru (double-cast as Maengin), Jang Hyun-sung, and others, join the production running through May 31. Director Jang says the play began from imagining Shin Goo’s first line and hopes this becomes one notable work among Shin Goo’s long career. (NOL 서경스퀘어 and 혜화동 are venue names.)
