90-Year-Old Actor Shin Goo Returns to Stage in Jang Jin Comedy

Legendary 90-year-old Korean actor Shin Goo will return to the stage in March in director Jang Jin’s new comedy play “The French Safe—Who Will Climb the North Wall” (불란서 금고). Jang wrote the play with Shin Goo in mind after being moved by his recent theater performance. The comedy centers on a group of people with different motives trapped in a bank’s underground vault that opens only when all electricity cuts at midnight. Shin Goo plays a master safecracker and accepted the role after a month of consideration; despite age-related physical challenges and memory difficulties, he is diligently rehearsing and inspiring younger cast members. Jang hopes the play will prove that his distinctive wordplay-and-rhythm style of comedy still resonates with today’s audiences. The production runs March 7–May 31 at NOL Seogyeong Square in Daehangno and features a cast including Seong Ji-ru, Jang Hyun-sung, Kim Seul-gi and others. (Daehangno: Seoul’s theater district)
