Wordplay and Quick Rhythm: Jang Jin’s Black Comedy Casts Legendary Shin Goo

Director-playwright Jang Jin unveiled his new black comedy stage play 'The French Safe: Who Will Climb the North Wall' at a production press event in Seoul. Inspired by actor Shin Goo’s performance in Waiting for Godot, Jang wrote the script thinking of Shin Goo’s distinctive cadence and cast the 90-year-old veteran as a blind safecracker. The plot centers on five strangers planning a bank safe heist in a basement under the rule that the safe opens when power fails at midnight; their hidden pasts and competing desires spiral into dark comedy. Shin Goo, who still treats acting as essential as eating, spoke fondly of his late colleague Lee Soon-jae and described rigorous preparation—walking and rebuilding his strength—to return to the stage. Co-stars include Sung Ji-ru, Jang Hyun-sung and a large ensemble; performances run March 7–May 31 at NOL Seogyeong Square in Jongno, Seoul. (NOL Seogyeong Square: a performance venue in Jongno)
