Yeom Da-yeon, a South Korean ballerina, won second prize and the audience award (popularity prize) at the prestigious Prix de Lausanne, a top international youth ballet competition. Born to professional dancers—her father Yeom Ji-hoon, the first Korean soloist at the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and her mother Hara Saori—Yeom trained via homeschooling at her parents’ ballet school to focus on technique rather than academic entrance exams. At the competition final she performed pieces including “Esmeralda” and said she felt she could finally enjoy performing rather than be nervous. Her goal is to join a major European ballet company and develop from the ground up in ballet’s historic centers. Yeom thanked supporters in Korea and vowed to become a dancer who moves audiences.
