Marco Confortola, a 54-year-old Italian IFMGA mountain guide, faces allegations of manipulating summit photos while claiming completion of all 14 eight-thousanders (8,000m peaks). After announcing he had finished the 14 peaks following a 2022 ascent of Khangchendzonga (Kangchenjunga), experts and fellow climbers raised doubts. The Himalayan Database reported suspected falsification on at least four summits, including Lhotse (2013), Makalu (2016), Annapurna (2006), Dhaulagiri (2017), and Khangchendzonga (2022). Confortola, a prominent figure in Italian mountaineering and a survivor of the deadly 2008 K2 expedition, had planned to time the 14-peak announcement with the 2026 Winter Olympics in Lombardy (Lombardia), which had been a sponsor. Online commenters dubbed him the “Photoshop emperor” amid the controversy.
