Fire Shuts Down SPC Samlip Plant, Convenience Stores Halt Bread Orders; Foodservice Industry on Alert

A fire at SPC Samlip’s Siwha factory forced a full shutdown of production, suspending orders of many packaged breads and frozen noodles at convenience stores CU and GS25. The plant makes hamburger buns, sliced bread, and frozen foods; sliced bread (shikppang) supply is especially critical because it serves coffee chains, convenience stores, and sandwich shops. Major restaurant chains including Burger King and Lotteria are checking bread deliveries and preparing substitute products. SPC Samlip plans to shift some production to other facilities and partner manufacturers, but restoring capacity will take time. The Siwha plant—already the site of a fatal industrial accident last year—held a dominant market share (about 67% overall, 73% in sliced bread). Authorities are investigating the fire’s cause; three workers were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Insurers and securities analysts warn the disruption could hurt SPC Samlip’s short-term finances depending on recovery and insurance payouts.
