Tony Award-winning director Rachel Chavkin, known for Hadestown and Great Comet, visited Korea to oversee rehearsals for the Korean premiere of the musical Rempicka, opening March 21 at Gangdong Art Center. Rempicka dramatizes the life of Polish painter Tamara de Lempicka (1898–1980), the so-called “Queen of Art Deco,” exploring her ambition, love and survival through turbulent 1920s–30s Europe. The Broadway production premiered in 2024 and earned multiple Tony nominations. Chavkin said the show compresses historical events to focus on Tamara’s emotional journey and emphasized dynamic, art-like performances. The Korean cast features top musical actresses Kim Sun-young, Park Hye-na and Jung Sun-ah as Rempicka, with prominent singers and actors in other roles. Chavkin also spoke about ongoing gender inequality on Broadway and the challenges of balancing career and family as a female director.
