Catalonia has banned rock climbing at the Oliana climbing area to protect nearby prehistoric rock paintings (petroglyphs). In December 2025 the regional government added 36 hectares of UNESCO World Heritage prehistoric rock art to its protected zone, unexpectedly including the Oliana crag. The sudden decision surprised the local climbing community—there had been no prior notice, and local authorities had even sought European funds to develop climbing at Oliana. The crag is known for very difficult sport routes (grades up to 5.15) and historic ascents, such as the world’s second 5.15c route and the first female on‑sight 5.14b. The move aims to preserve sensitive cultural heritage while restricting access to a globally significant climbing venue.
