National Museum of Korea director Yoo Hong-joon announced plans to ease crowding by opening the museum at 9:30 AM (30 minutes earlier) starting next month and rehousing more visitor amenities outdoors, including a ‘Mirror Pond Café’ and relaxed seating called ‘mulmung stairs’ (water-gazing steps). The museum, which hosted about 6.5 million visitors last year, will redesign visitor flow and operations under the vision “a museum for everyone.” The children’s museum will expand to about 4,950 m² by 2029. A planned customer relationship management (CRM) system for online booking and electronic ticketing has been delayed until year-end, pushing back any full roll-out of paid admission. Special exhibitions include a July food-culture show, the first Thai art exhibition in Korea (June–September), a life-size ‘Daedongyeojido’ map display, and a December immersive program on the Ulsan Bangudae petroglyphs (national treasure). International collaborations and touring shows of the Lee Kun-hee Collection are also scheduled. Director Yoo expects over 6 million visitors again this year as the museum shifts into a more public, multifunctional cultural space.
