Hwaseong Opens Arts Center with New Ballet 'GAT' Inspired by Traditional Hats

Hwaseong City will present a new contemporary ballet, 'GAT', on Feb. 27 at Dongtan Art Hall to celebrate the opening of Hwaseong Arts Center. The 75-minute, no-intermission work blends Korean aesthetics with modern ballet, using the traditional hat 'gat' (Korean traditional hat worn by men during the Joseon era) as its central motif. Dancers interpret various hat types and associated stories in scenes such as (女)Heukrip (women’s black-rimmed hat), Jurip (military hat), Jeongjagwan (Nolbu’s hat), Satgat (cone-shaped straw hat), Paeraengi (traveler’s hat), Jokduri (bridal coronet), (男)Heukrip (men’s black-rimmed hat), Muninhwa (scholar’s brush movements) and a finale portraying hat-making. The piece, produced by Yoonbyeol Ballet Company and choreographed by Park So-yeon, features 22 performers and guest stage fighters adding dynamic energy. Tickets are available through the Hwaseong City Cultural Tourism Foundation and NOL Ticket. The city aims to position the new arts center as a leading cultural hub in southern Gyeonggi Province.
