Gentle Monster Apologizes for Overwork Allegations, Scraps Discretionary Work System

Korean eyewear brand Gentle Monster’s operator i.i.combined apologized after allegations that some staff faced overwork and unpaid labor under a discretionary (duty-based) work system. The company said it will overhaul HR practices, immediately abolish the discretionary work scheme, and introduce a selective working hours system allowing flexible start/finish times. A new attendance and personnel management system will launch in April, department head training will be regularized, and overtime will be accurately compensated. The firm is also running an internal campaign, holding briefings and site meetings to gather employee feedback, and electing a new worker representative to consult on future changes. The management acknowledged shortcomings during rapid growth and pledged investments to correct issues and reflect results from ongoing labor inspections.
