Uninhabited Jukdo Island Gets 5G: Connecting Residents and Tourists

Jukdo, the largest satellite island of Ulleungdo long known as an uninhabited isle, has received new 5G wireless infrastructure after locals and occasional residents complained of poor communications. The island, famous for its 365-step “snail staircase” access and scenic hiking routes (e.g., Naesujeon–Seommok trail), had aging equipment installed about a decade ago that frequently failed, leaving it a “disconnected island.” KT and Ulleung County removed the old gear and installed modern 5G equipment—reportedly over ten times faster—with additional devices near the Naesujeon observatory to ensure stable coverage. The upgrade makes longer-term stays more feasible, helps farmers and part-time residents stay in touch, and improves services for tourists (online reservations, summer-season needs). KT said it will continue managing communications on remote islands for sovereignty, ecology, and tourism reasons.
