Korean original musicals steeped in local themes are drawing attention on Seoul stages. Mongyudowon, adapted from Choi In-ho’s novel and the Samguk Sagi folktale about Domi, blends ink-wash-inspired visuals and lighting with orchestral music fused with traditional vocal styles like jeongga (court songs) and gu-eum (ancient vocal techniques) to create a dreamlike world; it plans overseas runs. Fan Letter, a 10th‑anniversary fictionalized musical (faction) inspired by 1930s writers’ gatherings, uses refined lighting, shadow and choreography to deepen character psychology and has toured Taiwan, China and Japan while exploring English‑language markets. Seopyeonje, based on Lee Chang‑joon’s novel and known from the film, returns after re‑licensing and emphasizes Korea’s ‘sori’ (traditional vocal music) and family/art themes; producers say renewed domestic interest in Korean sentiment supports further international expansion. Together these works show a growing appetite for distinctly Korean stories and sounds in contemporary musical theatre.
