K-pop-trained pansori singer Kim Junsu, known as a leading 'soricgun' (traditional Korean vocalist), will appear in the theatrical reimagining 'Kallomacbeth' to mark theater company Mabangjin's 20th anniversary. The production, directed and adapted by Go Sun-woong, transforms Shakespeare’s Macbeth into a humorous, action-filled muhwupgeuk (Korean martial-arts-style play) while keeping the original tragedy’s weight. Kim Junsu will play Lady Macbeth and perform spoken acting instead of singing. The revival—first staged in 2010—moves the story to a Korean-futuristic setting, adds slapstick and fast-paced rhythm, and aims to keep audiences engaged without losing the theme of ambition and ruin. The play opens on the 27th at the National Theater’s Haneul Theater in Seoul; Mabangjin also presents other Shakespeare twists for its anniversary.
