Conductor Jung Myung-whun and pianist Yunchan Lim joined the Dresden Staatskapelle (SKD) for a finely detailed concert at Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall. The program opened with Weber’s overture to the opera Der Freischütz, a piece closely tied to SKD’s early history; Jung emphasized structure and breath to shape its forest and hunting moods with subtle, continuous flow. Young pianist Lim performed Schumann’s Piano Concerto (premiered in Dresden in 1845), earning praise for immersive, score-faithful phrasing that turned every note and rest into expressive speech and contemplation. In the second half, Jung and SKD played Dvořák’s Symphony No.9 “From the New World,” combining SKD’s warm, antique brass colors with refined string ensembles to create a nostalgic, Old World perspective on the work, though one critic noted the strings sometimes lacked the density expected for Dvořák’s robust Bohemian character. After sustained applause, Jung reflected on SKD’s long partnership and the growing prominence of Korea as a destination for top European orchestras; the orchestra encore included part of the third movement from Dvořák’s Symphony No.7.
