Pyeongtaek Art Center officially opened on the 30th with a gala featuring conductor Jung Myung-whun, the Dresden Staatskapelle, and pianist Lim Yoon-chan. The center’s upcoming season includes major international and Korean productions: The Marriage of Figaro (directed by Vincent Huguet) by the National Opera (Mar 13–14); a jazz concert by Wynton Marsalis with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (Mar 27); the Tony-winning Korean musical Maybe Happy Ending (Apr 4–5); Ambiguous Dance Company’s The Belt (Apr 17) known for the viral "Beom Naeryeonda" dance; recitals by pianist Sunwook Kim and violinist Clara-Jumi Kang (May 22) and pianist Baek Kun-woo’s 70th-anniversary recital (Sep 12); concerts by leading Korean orchestras (KBS Symphony, Seoul Philharmonic, National Symphony); and ballets Giselle (Sep 4–5) and The Nutcracker (Nov 20–21). The center will also present traditional Korean music centered on the Pyeongtaek Municipal Gugak (traditional music) Orchestra, reflecting the city’s reputation as a hub for gugak. Pyeongtaek Art Center houses a 1,318-seat main hall, a 305-seat small theater, galleries, rehearsal rooms, and a café. The director says they will build a distinct performance brand through both hosted and self-produced shows.
