South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will run special inspections of seafood origin labeling from Feb. 2–13 ahead of the Lunar New Year to ensure consumers can buy seafood with confidence. Inspectors will focus on traditional holiday items such as pollock, croaker, abalone, and tilefish, and on species prone to false origin labels like red sea bream and yellowtail. Teams including national fisheries investigators, volunteer seafood monitors, and local officials will check markets, supermarkets, and online sellers. False origin labeling can lead to up to seven years in prison or fines up to 100 million won; failing to label origin may incur fines up to 10 million won. The ministry urges the public to report suspected violations by calling 1899-2112 or via the KakaoTalk channel ‘수산물원산지표시’ (seafood origin labeling).
