Yanggu County in Gangwon Province has renamed its Nam-myeon to 'Gukto Jeongjungang-myeon' (National Geographic Center-myeon) to reflect that the geographic center of South Korea lies in the area. The county started a month-long resident participation campaign to replace old usages like 'Nam-myeon' or the short form 'Gukjeong-myeon,' aiming to establish the new official name in daily life. The campaign includes banners and posters, notices in government offices and village halls, promoting the official name at events and meetings, and community outreach using friendly slogans so residents can easily adopt the new name. The move is part of a broader local branding trend similar to name changes elsewhere (for example, Hanbando-myeon and Gasamunhak-myeon) that tie place names to geographic or cultural identity.
